Mobile Notary Appointment FAQs

A Louisiana notary public is a public official appointed by the Louisiana Secretary of State. Unlike most other states, Louisiana notaries are civil law notaries with broader authority and may prepare certain documents, including some powers of attorney, donations, affidavits, and provisional custody by mandate. Louisiana notaries also notarize signatures, help authenticate transactions, and help prevent fraud.

Louisiana notaries help authenticate transactions and prevent fraud, and they must pass a rigorous state-administered exam.

In accordance with Louisiana Administrative Code, Title 46 Professional and Occupational Standards Notaries Public §131. Notary Seal
A. A notary’s signature is his seal. If he elects to have a seal to use when notarizing documents, he is not required to have a particular style of seal to give authenticity to his copies.
B. The name of the notary and the witnesses must be typed, printed legibly, or stamped.
C. Every document notarized in the state of Louisiana shall have the notary identification number assigned to him/her by the secretary of state and that number shall be typed or printed legibly and placed next to the notary’s name. If the notary is an attorney who is licensed to practice law in the state of Louisiana, he may use his Louisiana state bar roll number in lieu of his notary identification number.

Some receiving parties have their own acceptance requirements that may be different from Louisiana’s legal notarization requirements. Always review the instructions for your specific form or agency.

As a standard practice, we apply our rubber stamp “notary seal” to documents we notarize to help meet receiving-party expectations of authenticity and to prevent questions or delays with your notarized documents.

We can review the document wording with you, but the receiving party should tell you what they require. If the document does not clearly state the notarial act, check with the agency or organization that will receive it.

An acknowledgment is used when the signer confirms that they signed the document willingly. A jurat is used when the signer must swear or affirm that the statements in the document are true. The receiving agency, court, bank, or other organization usually decides which one is required.

Certified copy service may be available for many documents, but some public records must be obtained directly from the issuing agency. Ask before the appointment about your specific document. You must bring the original document to the appointment, and our policy requires that the copies are made in the notary’s presence.

We help with many common heirship and deceased-owner vehicle or boat transfer documents, but final filing requirements depend on the agency and the facts of the case.
